2023 Micro Nonfiction Story Writing Contest Results
Congratulations to the winners of the Dreamers 2023 Micro Nonfiction Story Writing Contest!
We were blown away by the exceptional quality of the entries we received to our inaugural Micro Nonfiction Story Writing Contest. Our team faced a tough decision, but after careful consideration, we have awarded 1 first place prize, 1 second place prize, and 5 honourable mentions. Congratulations to all who submitted their work – we were truly impressed by your talent and creativity!
We want to extend a special thank you to Phil McNichol, our esteemed judge, for his invaluable insights and expertise in selecting this year’s winners. As a long-time newspaper reporter, award-winning columnist, and author of the popular blog “Finding Hope Ness,” Phil brought a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table. Thank you, Phil!
And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for – we’re thrilled to announce this year’s talented winners!
First Place:
Write About It
by Michelle Spencer:
“I don’t want to sound ungrateful. It gave me a boost and there are obvious advantages to doing well. Such as, not dying. But what I’m trying to say is, I wasn’t striving to win. It just happened and I didn’t know what it would cost me.”
Second Place:
A Dog Called Orion
by Lesley Mapstone:
“I call him Orion because under the blackest of skies he lies like a gentle beacon, on his pile of burned rubbish, embodying the spirit of a warrior who has yet to be conquered by the wrath that life has offered him.”
The first and second place winners have had their winning stories published in Issue 14 of the Dreamers Magazine.
Honorable Mentions:
Playlist Memories
by Jennifer Berger
Heart Shaped Uterus
by Betsy Guttmacher
A Good Egg
by Julia Mais
We Are Here
by Hannah Opp
Goodbye Dad
by Jan Robertson
All stories that have won honourable mention will be published online on the Dreamers website in the coming weeks.
Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to everyone who entered the contest!
