Riding Coach, Amtrak (the Lake Shore Limited)

– Poetry by Marta Holliday –

Featured in issue 15 of Dreamers Magazine and second place winner of our 2023 Haiku Contest!

We gaze, zone out, read.
Boxed dinners, cards, Ipod beats
Our lives intersect.

About the Author – Marta Holliday

Marta Holliday is an associate professor in the department of Languages and Literatures at Alabama State University where she teaches classes in English composition, American literature and African American studies. She received my BA from Marymount College of Fordham University in 2004 in English and Creative Writing, and a Master’s and PhD degrees from the University of Iowa in 2009 and 2011, respectively, in English and Literary Studies. Marta has been interested in writing haiku since she was a teenager, and is captivated by the depth that can be revealed in its brevity, its simplicity. She enjoys creating haiku about growing up in her hometown, the multiracial community of Uniondale, New York, as well as haiku about travel and the sights, sounds, smells and experiences of New York City. Marta finds tremendous inspiration in other African American writers who have written haiku, such as Richard Wright and Etheride Knight.
